Financial reporting & fair value
Fair values your auditors can rely on.

A reporting valuation must be anchored to the applicable accounting framework and the asset or liability being measured. Business value, fair value and recoverable amount are not synonyms.

Technical brief

Agree the reporting requirement first

The finance team and auditor should confirm whether the assignment concerns investment fair value, impairment, purchase-price allocation or another measurement. FRS 102 and IFRS have different requirements. The report sets out the specified framework and unit of account rather than applying a generic model.

Use supportable assumptions

Forecasts must reconcile to budgets and market evidence. Discount rates, terminal growth and cash-flow definitions must be internally consistent. Sensitivities are particularly important where headroom is limited or the valuation depends heavily on terminal value.

An auditable evidence trail

We document source data, adjustments, methodology and key judgements. Independent valuation supports management’s assessment; it does not transfer management’s reporting responsibility or guarantee auditor acceptance. Any purchase-price allocation or specialised asset valuation requires a separately agreed scope.

Methodology

01

Relief-from-royalty, MEEM and DCF for intangibles and cash-generating units.

Key valuation issues

Where value is won or lost.

Audit challenge

Assumptions must survive auditor review and specialist scrutiny.

Intangible identification

Separating goodwill from customer, technology and brand assets.

Discount rates

Rates must be consistent with market participants’ view of risk.

Disclosure

Key judgements and sensitivities need clear reporting.

Your instruction, clearly defined

Scope agreed before work begins.

We agree the valuation purpose and date, the interest being valued, the methods considered, the information required and permitted reliance. The written proposal sets out the fee, VAT treatment and delivery timetable. The result is a documented expert assessment — not a transaction guarantee or an automated estimate.
